Knights of Columbus

John Cardinal Newman Council #9445

Fresno, California

Welcome! Thank you for visiting our web site!

The Knights of Columbus has been in existence more than 100 years. It was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in 1882 to help provide aid to widows and their children by the men of the parish. He used Charity, Unity and Fraternity as the founding principles of the Order. In 1900 Patriotism was added as the fourth principle of our Order. Today, the Knights of Columbus is a worldwide men's organization that is still growing. The Supreme Council of our Order is headquartered in New Haven, Connecticut. The Order also consists of State Councils, Regional Chapters, Individual Councils and Fourth Degree Assemblies.

The Knights and their families here at St. Paul Newman Center help to support the Church and their community through Council programs that includes both labor and money. The Knights have chaired the ice cream booth at the annual Renaissance Festival, hosted the Lenten Dinners, given out scholarships to worthy students, and have donated money collected during our annual "Tootsie Roll Drive" to a local organization for mentally retarded children. Brother Knights also serve the Newman Center as Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers and Choir Members.

To become a Knight, there are only two requirements that you must meet to be eligible:

If you meet the above requirements and wish to become a Knight click on How to Join.

Our Council meetings are at the St. Paul Newman Center on the second Thursday of each month starting at 7:00pm. The St. Paul Newman Center is located at 1572 E. Barstow in North Central Fresno. It is on the frontage road just across the street from Bulldog Stadium. You must have a current membership card to attend the meeting.

Bishops Ask Catholics to Pray a 'Novena for Faithful Citizenship'

With the presidential election of 2008 now just nine weeks away, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has asked all Catholics in the United States to pray a novena for life, justice and peace called the Novena for Faithful Citizenship. The bishops encourage praying the novena on nine consecutive Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 2, on nine consecutive days beginning on Oct. 26, or any other combination that works for individual or group participants.           Click here for the Text of the Novena.

Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace

The Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace seeks to unite Knights, Catholics and all people of good will – regardless of their religious faith – in prayer for peace.

While Sept. 11 will always be remembered for the tragic loss of life, Knights hope that this somber occasion will be the foundation of an annual opportunity for a day of earnest prayer for peace in the world.

To commemorate this tragedy with dignity and hope, the Supreme Council passed a resolution in 2004 to observe September 11 as a day of prayer for peace.

“The World Day of Prayer for Peace will bring to the world the Church’s message of peace and reconciliation, so that religion will always be a cause for mutual respect and harmony, and never for violence or hatred,” said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson.

“In a special way, we remember the brave men and women of the military who work tirelessly, even to the point of sacrificing their own lives, to bring about true peace rooted in justice,” he added.
